A Long Week...

Dan was out of town this week in Philadelphia and I missed him. It's amazing how used to someone you can become. I couldn't sleep a wink all week. I watched wayyyy too many movies and cried myself to sleep...lol. My little bro Shawn came over every day and it was so nice to have someone to hang out with me every evening. I also got a girls night out and that was fun too. So, I guess it wasn't all bad, but I wouldn't be a fan of doing it often. I'm so glad he's home :)

Gaming

Not many of you may know about my small 6 month addiction to World of Warcraft (WOW). Yes, go ahead and laugh (I really can't believe I'm blogging about this?!). What is WOW? It is orcs, taurens, trolls, and other ugly animated characters that go on quests to earn levels. There were 70 levels when I played (I reached 65, many say the game really began at lvl 70). If you worked at it, you could gain a level or two a day (depending on how much time you spent playing it). You play online with people from all over the world. You join a network (guild) of friends and help each other pass these quests and fight instances where you earn money and better fighting gear. You fight....yes, fight...and I KICKED TRASH! My brother has played this for wayyyy too long, in my opinion, and begged me to just try it. So, I did. It was so much fun! I had a chance to hang with my uber kewl bro and his fun friends online. I was seriously good at this game ;) Shocker, huh?! Well, I pretty much know way to much about the gaming world. I love games! It is seriously, like, one of my most fav things ;) Dan was NOT happy with my little WOW addiction and because I love my husband and because it wasn't the best thing to do with my time, I gave it up, much to the chagrin of my bro. I am so grateful that I did! Dan and I decided long ago, that our kids were not going to have video games. I don't mind them playing them at a friends house, but they are not allowed in mine. They have way too much to distract them, why add to it. Also, in my opinion one of the biggest addictions out there is gaming. Believe me, playing WOW for 6 months showed me that! The sad thing is this game was being played by kids as young as 8! The oldest person I met was 68! It's not particularly a bad game and safety measures can be taken to block out language while playing but that's beside the point. I know I sound old in saying this but when I was younger, I remember playing Nintendo, but most of my time was spent with my friends outside or just hanging out. The computer and gaming is like communication and social interaction without leaving your home...sedentary and just not all good...especially if the majority of your time is spent doing it. Moderation in ALL things, right?

As a side note...games can be GREAT! They teach children/adults a great deal. They can be good for the mind...I'm primarily talking about games and gaming in excess ;) They design them to be addicting so you'll want to play them all the time, not just a little.
Tuesday Hailey's friend Jayden sent her home with one of her Webkinz. Hailey tells me all about this lovely furry little friend she's borrowed and how she wants to go online and play with it. I'm completely clueless about Webkinz... Why? I don't know?! It is seriously THE cutest thing! Talk about being a dumb Mom...Hailey informs me that everyone has one! All of her best Friends do and send messages to each other. So where is the harm in this? right? For two days, this is all Hailey talks about and wants to spend hours on my computer playing Webkinz. Thats not so bad is it? And so begins the drama....she wants to start collecting them. I honestly have no problem with it. They are cute...it's good, clean fun. But I'm not sure spending huge chunks of time on this kind of stuff every day is the best thing. What do you think? I want my kids to do fun stuff like this but would hate for it to evolve into other things that lead to...I don't know....worse? I mean kids are dropping out of school, not getting jobs and all that from gaming addictions?!

Do your kids have Webkinz?

The Dentist Saga...Part 2

Abby visited the lovely pediatric dentist today. He just wanted to 'talk' with her first before the 'big' day. I cannot tell you how many times I had to tell her that we were just going to 'talk' to the dentist, not get the fillings done. She was still so nervous! If it wasn't going to be so expensive, it would be funny. She willingly went back and as she had more x-rays done, she told the nurse how mad her Mom was at her right now...haha, the nurse was laughing so hard. I really wish you all knew Abby. How can I explain her personality? She is one kid who just doesn't hold back. She sings loud, no matter where she is, she dances...very well, mind you, holds a beat better than me...everywhere and whenever music is on! She will tell you she likes boys and exactly who she likes and why. She doesn't get embarrassed by much. She is the most outgoing kid I know. She makes me laugh! She is happy, positive and just super funny! So, she is talking this nurses ear off the whole time, mostly because she is nervous, but it was very cute. The dentist was wonderful. Abby would not lay down on that chair. She was watching the movie on the ceiling sitting up, because she had to see exactly what was going on. The dentist came in and asked her how she was and talked with me about her previous experience. He was great about talking to me without her listening and keeping her distracted. He explained exactly what he was doing as he looked at her teeth and was kind but firm with her. We basically decided she will go under anesthesia. Given her previous anxiety with nitric oxide (laughing gas) and the fact that she would NOT do it and because she has a few fillings that need to be done, this would be the best thing. He suggested regular check ups and then working with her on taking the laughing gas and over time, getting her back to the regular dentist. All in all, it was a great visit. I've decided NOT to tell Abby what exactly will be taking place or exactly when we will have this next visit. We will just go 'run errands' and take her to the dentist that day. This was the dentists idea. He recommended that telling her exactly how and when things would happen would only give her more unnecessary anxiety. I agree.

BTW- this office had the coolest fish! Joe was just enthralled with them. I'm really glad they had such neat stuff, because we're sure paying for it...haha!

I'm Not Answering the Phone Anymore...

because that's how you get asked to speak in church. I guess this is just what I need right now. I've been praying often and trying to read my scriptures and trying to not hold grudges and of course, I get a call to speak... My topic is service. Yet another thing I need to do better. I really don't mind speaking in church, I'm not afraid of speaking in front of people, but lately I'm just not 'feeling it', ya know? Do you ever have times in your life when your just not in 'spiritual mode'? That would be me. Even more of a reason to study a topic and share it with the ward, don't ya think? Anyone have any great scriptures or talks they've enjoyed on Service? Please share, I'm all for studying all I can about this topic this week!

The Staple

Today I get a phone call around lunch time. It is the school nurse. Abby has stapled her finger. She is upset and needs to talk to me on the phone. The staple didn't hit the bone, but had to be pulled out by the nurse. It was Abby, people, it was the end of the world...!

She's doing just fine.

I told her the dentist is not as bad as that experience.

Does she believe me?

No :(

Twilight...part 2

Okay...so the second time was better. Maybe it was all the giggling going on around me, and watching it with the "girls" instead of the man. I'll say this, Edward has cool hair and Emmett made me laugh. It just might be ownable, I might have to see it again to be sure...lol!
